Most children in Bertie County attend the Bertie County Public Schools. Besides public education, others attend private schools or charter schools.

A small handful of local parents prefer homeschooling.

Beyond high school, the North Carolina Community College System provides two nearby community colleges—Martin County Community College (with an in-county campus in Windsor) and Roanoke-Chowan Community College, near Hertford County.

Bertie County Public Schools

The Bertie County Board of Education crafts policies and processes for the public schools. The citizens of the county elect these representatives to make the educational policies for all public school students.

Elected Board of Education Members:

  • District 1 (Windsor): Reba Cooper Carlton
  • District 2 (Merry Hill and Whites): Rickey Freeman
  • District 3 (Colerain, Mitchells): Christine Dudley
  • District 4 (Roxobel and Woodville): Norman Cherry
  • District 5 (Snakebite and Indian Woods): Tarsha Dudley, Chair

Additionally, Mr. Otis Smallwood serves the county as the school superintendent, administering all the policies daily.
