The Powellsville Fire Department will mark a milestone on Saturday, March 12, 2022–they will host their 42nd annual Bar-B-Q Fundraiser event.

Since that first year, people have caught the distinct aroma of savory pulled pork seasoned with a special barbecue sauce and lined up to get a taste of the goodness.

Oh, how well the entire Bertie County community looks forward to this event. Generally, cars line up around the Powellsville Fire Department from the time the volunteers start ringing sales until closing time. Sometimes, they even cause a rare (albeit brief) traffic backup in the sleepy community of about 250-ish residents.

During the traditional event in years past (i.e., before coronavirus), locals would gather at tables, pick at their plates, and shoot the breeze with their neighbors and friends. In fact, locals swear that the Powellsville Fire Department’s Annual Bar-B-Q was among the best-attended public events in town.

However, this year will look more like last year’s socially distanced fundraiser. So instead of seating hungry diners, they will set up a drive-thru, selling their famous pork by the plate or the pound. This cautionary measure will ensure compliance with covid safety practices.

The Powellsville Bar-B-Q Fundraiser Raises the Money for the Fire Department to Serve the Community

Sure, the food is excellent. But the fundraiser does serve a specific purpose. Small, volunteer fire departments in North Carolina operate on the tightest budgets. They operate only because of the hard work of volunteers. From the firefighters who show up to douse a blaze at your home to the community supporters who work behind the scenes, most rural fire departments would not exist without these dedicated people.

So the success of the Powellsville Bar-B-Q fundraiser is vital to maintaining a thriving fire squad in the community. According to event organizer Greg Hughes, the fire department will rely on this sale for general operating expenses this year.

The event will run from 11 am to 6 pm on March 12th. You can pick up your Bar-B-Q by the plate or by the pound, driving through to pick it up from the safety of your vehicle. For more information, click this link.

The fire department’s address is 106 Curtis Street, Powellsville, North Carolina. Be sure to mark your calendar and come out to support these essential volunteer workers.
