The Bertie Alumni Community Association (BACA) is slated to resume its annual MLK Basketball Classic on January 15, 2022, tipping off at the old Bertie High School Gym at 10 am. This tournament comes back to the community after an unfortunate cancellation last year due to coronavirus concerns.

Before the pandemic hit the world, BACA hosted the MLK Basketball Classic annually for about eight years. The proceeds they raise benefits local students directly. In fact, BACA always uses these funds to award scholarship monies to deserving local students, helping them realize their dreams of attending higher educational programs.

Teams come to Bertie County from surrounding areas like Virginia, Rocky Mount, Hertford County. Of course, local teams also participate.

Besides receiving funds from hosting the basketball games, BACA raises money at the MLK Basketball Classic by selling concessions: chicken, fish, ribs, hot dogs, French fries, soft drinks, water, and lemonade.

BACA hosts this event around MLK day each year, honoring Dr. King’s belief that education is fundamental for achieving every person’s full potential.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
