At the March 7, 2022 meeting of the Bertie County Commissioners, County Manager Juan Vaughan announced his decision to free the smiles and lift the mask mandates of Bertie County employees, effective tomorrow at 8:30 am.

Vaughan explained that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently updated their guidance. New advice issued now includes a three-tiered system to determine when and if employees must don masks. The new CDC guidance empowers communities to make decisions more flexibly. Additionally, they can make adjustments rapidly if the community needs change.

Each local area now utilizes a designation of a low, medium, or high, based on the number of active cases of COVID-19. Bertie County cases recently plummeted from “high” to “medium.” Thus, Vaughan announced the decision to the Commissioners.

In addition to explaining the science behind his decision to reverse mask mandates, Vaughan expressed gratitude to the county employees. He acknowledged how the employees under his direction diligently and patiently wore masks to help stop the spread of COVID-19. But he also explained how they are more than ready to free their smiles.

Bertie County Public Schools also have the masking decision on their agenda for tomorrow afternoon.
