The Bertie County Board of Education voted to lift mask mandates for children in the school system, making masking optional. The change formally takes effect effective immediately.
School Superintendent, Dr. Otis L. Smallwood, explained the updates to the COVID-19 toolkit, which outlines the latest state and CDC recommendations. For example, parents of children who are unvaccinated or have other health risk factors might still opt for a mask, as recommended. However, the schools will no longer enforce mandates.
Also, Dr. Smallwood also noted that the social distance guidelines dropped from six feet to three feet. Classrooms already implemented this change in accordance with this new guidance.
Children who still choose to wear masks will receive support in their decision.
