After racing virutally in 2020, the Good Shepherd Food Pantry’s 2021 Bertie Spectacular 5k returns to in-person for 2021. They will hold this annual fundraiser next week, October 30, 2021, with a 9 am starting time.

The Bertie Spectacular 5k charity road race raises money for the Good Shepherd Food Pantry of NC, Inc. This non-profit charity serves the nutritional needs of Bertie County residents.

The Bertie Spectacular 5k draws runners from Bertie County and beyond. It starts behind Windsor Town Hall and takes runners through Livermon Park and Mini Zoo, past the sports fields, and through charming neighborhoods.

They are still accepting runners for the upcoming race. Run the East, a North Carolina race management company, manages race registration on behalf of the food pantry. You may sign up online by clicking here.

A family-friendly one-mile fun run and walk follows the end of the 5k race.

Race sponsors include Perdue Farms, Bojangles, Vidant Hospital, Liberty Farms, Beasley Farms, Carolina Pine and Hardwood, Jernigan Oil and Propane, Pritchett and Burch, LLC, Roanoke Electric Cooperative, and Walker Funeral Home.

Good Shepherd Food Pantry Mission Statement

A look at the Good Shepherd’s website reveals an extensive outreach that helps many local families. They sum up their hard work in their mission statement:

The mission of the Good Shepherd Food Pantry is to increase self reliance, relieve hunger and improve the quality of life for Bertie County families. After serving over 6,500 families throughout 2020 we do everything we can to ensure Bertie County’s 9 towns are continuously served. “

Good Shepherd Food Pantry of North Carolina, Inc. Mission Statement

Besides providing food to residents on the second and third Saturday of each month, Good Shepherd has other programs.

The Good Shepherd Food Pantry operates the Windsor Farmers Market in the summer. The market accepts SNAP/EBT benefits to help at-risk families purchase healthy, local produce. Also, they have seasonal dates coming on November 19th and December 17th.

Additionally, the food pantry works with Perdue Farms and Youth Bertie to ensure that the county’s children can access food on weekends. Of course, most locals know that all children in Bertie County qualify for free school nutrition.

However, children face hunger at home over weekends and holidays. The backpack program distributes food for children to eat over the weekends. Besides the backpacks, Perdue distributes chicken vouchers to provide fresh meat for the participating families.

So how can you support the Good Shepherd Food Pantry and the Bertie Spectacular 5k?

Register to run or walk the Bertie Spectacular 5k or one-mile walk. The signup fee is $25 (5k) or $15 (walk) and directly benefits your local food pantry. Also, you can become a food pantry volunteer. Or come out to cheer on the runners and make a donation–every bit helps!
